An air filter is car part that gets rid of solid particulates like dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria from air. They are used
where the quality of the air around it is important, like in a vent system and in car engines, like the combustion engine
The combustion air filter prevents abrasive particles from entering the engine's cylinders, where it would cause mechanical
tear and oil would also get contaminated.
Most injection cars use a pleated paper filter element in the shape of a flat panel. The filter placed inside a plastic box
connected to the throttle body with an intake tube.
Some vehicles still use carburetors and these cars will use a cylindrical air filter, which is a few inches high and between
6 and 16 inches in diameter. The filter is located above the carburetor and sometimes in the throttle body.
Paper
Air filters based on paper are the nearly always first choice for automobile engine air cleaners, this is due to the fact
that they are very efficient, also being easy to service, and very cost effective. If a pleated paper filter (the usual filter
style) is sized appropriately for the airflow volumes encountered in a particular application, such filters present only trivial
restriction to flow until the filter has become significantly clogged with dirt.
Foam
Oil foam elements are less used than the paper elements but can be found in some after market parts for cars.
Cotton
Oily cotton is used in an even smaller number of aftermarket auto filters - these are apparently very good performers but
also costly.
